Jay-Z at Glastonbury

After being dissed by almost the entire population of Britain, Jay-Z ripped it at Glastonbury. He walked on singing Wonderwall which got the crowd onside from the start.

Looks like it would have been awesome.

locals

listening to the hip hop show on triple j about a month ago and i caught the end of a good sounding track that was identified in the back-announce (a technical term) as by some guys from tasmania
needless to say it piqued my interest

further to this, something else rang a bell
the artist was 'mdusu & dameza ft. johnny hack'
johnny hack is a guy who used to go to our school, and we used to see him around sometimes
so props to him for getting on the radio

anyway, here's mdusu & dameza...

couldn't find a picture of johnny hack

here's the track on their myspace for you to listen to

Elucid - Starstruck

I haven't been on the internets much this month but I have been listening to Elucid tear apart every beat he gets on. If you haven't downloaded the Smash & Grab mixtape you should do it now. Here's another song over a lazy, electro Santogold beat. It's a response to the Sean Bell situation.

The Roots

Today as I listened to the radio at work I heard a song that made me happy. Turns out The Roots are going to release a new album soon and it will feature the track 'Get Busy.' It's a crackin' hunk of beats and effects, and then Black Thought comes in and....!!! Check it out.

PS. Happy birthday Tim!

Happy Birthday King Tim!

Hey Tim, it's great to have you on the blog since my love for hip hop began with you and Simon and trying to figure out all the lyrics to 'Set Ya Mind'. It's always been fun! Also, the title of the blog wouldn't be anywhere near as awesome without your coining or at least re-badging the phrase 'Straight Outta Kingston'. I really enjoy hearing your voice in your posts too.

As a tribute here are two things which say 'hip hop' and 'Tim' to me:
1. What You Say (instrumental) by LA Symphony
2. De La Soul - Stakes is High

Keep it real!

Mixtape Monday - Elucid

Check this out! I've just gotten into this dude Elucid. His Smash N Grab mixtape is banging. He raps over 'You Can Run' by Johnny Cash and 'Army of Me' by Bjork and a heaps of others like Ratatat, The Black Angels, Kenna and Chemical Brothers. He never gets lost on these weird beats, he totally rips them. He has the passion/anger of a younger Ice Cube but is more agile. It's a breath of bizarre, apocalyptic, Waits-esque air for hip hop.
Also, check out 'Step Careful' off his upcoming album Save Yourself.
